Transforming Fear to Joy

Perspective: Abundance and Scarcity

Everywhere we see signs of abundance (plenty) — homes, gardens, beauty, health, wealth and laughter.  And everywhere we see signs of scarcity — homelessness, pollution, violence, poverty, greed and depression.  I would go so far as to say both exist within all of us — as is the outer world, so is the inner world.

At times I am filled with a sense of abundance and love, so much so that I feel on top of the world.  At other times, fortunately much rarer than in the past, I feel and fear scarcity.  These earthly ‘dualities’ are reflections of our inner experience.  Like a giant cinema screen, Life shows us the array of possibilities from which we can choose.

On a clear-seeing day, we would choose abundance.  However, it is not enough to choose only abundance, for when we have plenty, we also have plenty to share.  It is our gift of sharing abundance that reduces and eventually eliminates the inner and outer experience of scarcity.  This is only one of the many paradoxes Life presents to us.  That is, “In giving, we receive.”  It is also the first to be forgotten when worry and self-doubt cloud our judgment.  When we allow fear to prevail, there is no room for the experience of abundance.  Instead, choose to make no room for worry and self-doubt.  By shedding these fears, we create space for abundance in our body, mind and spirit.

My poem below expresses my own balancing act between love’s abundance and fear’s scarcity.

Perspective

It is those moments that take my breath away
when I ponder the bigger questions of life.
Questions like “Who am I?”  “Why am I here?”
“What can I contribute that is uniquely me?”

The answers come easily then,
and I see truth with certainty.
Fed by a direct line to the cosmic library,
all that is written and known becomes available.

In these moments, I do not feel separate
from the earth, from myself, from others.
These moments are glimpses across the veil
between a world of walk and talk
and a world of knowing.

With each day we walk and talk,
the draw to knowing grows stronger.
And as aimful earthly wanderers,
we are destined to balance both.

What fear can you shed right now to make room for greater abundance and love in your life?  What abundance can you share with others to reduce scarcity from our world?
