Transforming Fear to Joy

The nature of life is such that what we view outside of ourselves is happening in our inner world. That is to say, if we see truth, beauty, and goodness around us, we are experiencing it within. Our perception is our reality, which is why yoga teaches us that personal perception is not universally real or true. Instead, it is a projection of our inner sensations, emotions, and thoughts onto our outer world. And, the outer world (our outer nature) reflects our humanity (our inner nature).

Consider the combined energetic potential of a global population consisting of 8,237,778,076 (that’s 8+ billion as of Monday, August 4, 2025). As spiritual beings living a massive human existence, we have the power to create and destroy on an enormous scale. Knowing, which is appropriate when, is the fine balancing act between these forces. When we align with Nature’s flow, we respond from a place of harmony. When we are not aligned with the natural forces surrounding us, we respond from a place of ego and fear.

The surrender to Nature’s irrational, strangely confused formations produces in us a feeling of inner harmony with the force responsible for these phenomena. […] that same indivisible divinity is active through us and in Nature, and […] originates in the soul whose essence is eternity, whose essence we cannot know but which most often intimates itself to us as the power to love and create.
Hermann Hesse, Demian

I’ve tried to capture this spirit and earthly union in the poem below.

Indivisible Divinity

We speak of this promise; from chaos flows
creation. Still, fear prevails when raging winds
roil nature’s ferocious forces, muddying
already fouled water.

Forests, whole species, disappear while
melting floes, pandemic crises, and fire storms
decimate millions. Chaos surrounds, penetrates,
and squeezes out space with overloaded detritus.

The message is clear; earthly balance is lost, and
this outer register is now at work within. Still,
our ability to respond remains. Even now,
love and hope hold despair at bay.

Inner harmony flows as earthly alignment grows.
Our indivisible divinity protects, guides, and
provides from its dancing emptiness.
