In celebration of Labour Day, Deri Latimer and I put the finishing touches on our latest creative collaboration — how to design happy, healthy and humane work systems, organizations and ‘communities of organizations’ (next week’s blog post).
The image to the right synthesizes Deri’s findings after interviewing local enterprises that responded to the question, “What do healthy organizations do?” In essence, peoples’ responses looked like this —
Help people to:
- be seen
- be heard
- be invited to contribute
- do something meaningful
- be valued
- be happy
- make a difference
- have a life at work
As you read through each of the bullets, did you find yourself nodding your head in agreement? In our hearts, we know this list to be true, but how many of you can say it is true in your workplace or in your life?
As a Labour Day celebration for yourself, choose the one item from the list most important to you and write an affirmation “to make it so” in your life. Here’s what mine looks like, and I repeat it whenever I feel less than happy.
Joy is my only job!
Here’s wishing you a joyful Labour Day.
