The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali provide threads of wisdom to guide and support those on the journey to enlightenment (to attaining spiritual knowledge or insight). The first sutra as translated by Chip Hartranft states, “Now, the teachings of yoga.” Loosely interpreted it means — in the present moment, is when the union of mind-body-spirit (wholeness) is revealed. On our journey to wholeness, the sutras also assure us there are sign posts for us to be aware of. We utilize those signs by paying attention to what is emerging within us; right here, right now.
My poem below illustrates some of the “road” signs that are now visible in my own journey to enlightenment. Click the audio clip below if you would like to hear me reading this poem.
Signs
Subtle are the signs of creative chaos;
not the usual blustery swirling of mental leaves
caught in a tornado of imagination.
This time, a soft dusting away of residual ashes
from their hidden hearth accompanies
a recognition of “never going back.”
Comfortable ruts dissolve into new risks.
A reflective awareness of decluttering
foretells this unexpected emergence.
And clear seeing begins redefining
what lies ahead to initiate this rising phoenix.
