Transforming Fear to Joy

Many years ago I read a relationship book that differentiated between romantic and real love.  Unfortunately, the book has disappeared from my ‘lending library’ and I cannot remember the author’s name.  Maybe s/he will read this blog and claim their words because they stayed with me.

list of romantic vs real love characteristics
Romantic love prevents real love
.  It was quite a staggering statement for me as I rapidly checked off the items in the left-hand list—well not so quickly when I hit ‘desperation’ and ‘driven by necessity’.  They left a scratchy feeling inside and I didn’t like that, but I had to admit their presence.  But, what about ‘intensity’and ‘passion’!  So many exciting memories came to mind.  Taking in the list on the right, I mused, “Seems kind of boring.”  “What does cooling look like anyway?”

It took several more years (and relationships) before I began to understand the wisdom in real love.  The author of these words spoke a truth so clearly that even though my conscious mind did not ‘get it’, my soul held its meaning until I awakened.  Such truths are glimpses of possibility, whispers of inspiration, provided moment by moment to us.   All that is required from us is to be awake.

In 2001, I wrote the poem below to honour these whispered gifts so freely given.

Whisper of Inspiration

When you touched my hand, I
Heard a voice
Inside my head
Speak . . .
Pass not by
Else you
Regret your choice.

Open your heart.
Fear not what you have called forth.

I listened,
Not to my fear but my
Serenity.
Peace resides here
Imprinting my soul with joy.
Rarer than this
And equally treasured, your heart
Touched mine.
In to me you see, and though we’ve
Only just begun,
Now our souls dance in unity.

What whispers of inspiration have you received today?  What truths are they telling you about you?
