Transforming Fear to Joy

Points of Personal Power — People, Places, Present Possibilities

One of my greatest discoveries was realizing I could heal myself merely by paying attention to what was arising within me as well as around me. Everyone, everything, every moment is a clue revealing the path toward healthy, happy living. Or, as the philosophers put it, directing us to beauty, truth and goodness. The easy part is picking up the clues, which are obviously right in front of me. The hard part is holding my attention on them long enough to gather the understanding and wisdom I need.

In the early days of my “journey to joy,” I recall wondering how I could ever be present moment-to-moment (24/7) when I could barely do so for a 30-minute meditation. An ever chattering mind brought forth doubt, denial and “little shiny bits” to distract away from the present. Fortunately, that too has passed making room for greater joy. What once felt so overwhelming and complex became quite simple — show up in each moment. Therein lies the point of power from which we can grow.

My poem below reflects the empowering gift exchange brought forth by the people, places and possibilities in my own life.

Points of Power

Everything I see has the potential
to press me to the edge of my capacity,
to inspire me to reform.

Everyone I know presents a possibility
to create space for joy’s inner expansion,
and, thereby, squeeze out misery and suffering.

Every moment is a point of power,
an opportunity to break new ground,
to respond rather than postpone.

Every action is a step closer to self-mastery,
a tablespoon of discipline that aggregated
swells confidence and unveils joy.
